Among other possible topics, think about ideas related to collaboration vs. appropriation.
Which site has more in common with "My Boyfriend Came Back from the War"
and which has more in common with "I Know Where Your Cat Lives"? Why?
I think that thru-you has more in common with I know where your cat lives because it is essentially re-purposing an existing website in a different manner (Thru-you: youtube and I know where your cat lives: Google Maps) and inbflat has more in common with My boyfriend came back from the war because it is more interactive with different things you can do (also the box style setup)
ReplyDeleteinbflat and thru-you are similar because they both mix youtube music and create a different experience with it. The main difference is that inbflat lets you control the mixing and thru-you has pre-mixed music that you can play.
ThruYou is a compilation of youtube videos that makes up a composition while inBflat allows anyone to create their own composition by allowing the choices of videos to play. I think that Kutiman's idea is original, but he gains youtube popularity by using other people's videos which in my opinion is not fair.
ReplyDeleteInBflat is similar to "My boyfriend came from war" because it allows the viewer to interact with the media while ThruYou is similar to "I know where your cat lives" because the music is pre made.
I think that InBflat is most like My boyfriend came back from war because you able to manipulate how you want to view the videos and which order you want to view them in, much like the words you click on the War website. The idea is pretty amazing that you could take these videos and play them however you want and them still being harmonious regardless.
ReplyDeleteThru You is more similar to I know where your cat lives because he took different videos and put them together in a harmonious way. It's a very similar idea to the InBflat website by taking these videos and putting them in a harmonious way. This video is much less versatile and can't be manipulated to what the viewer wants. However, it is taking other people's videos and turning it into their work. I just hope he had the people's approval to include them in their videos.
Thru You is more like I know where your cat lives. Both pieces take photos or videos that are already on the internet and use them to create art. This seems more like appropriation than collaboration because the original post was not intended to end up in this format.
ReplyDeleteInBflat is more like My Boyfriend Came Back From War because the viewer can choose how they experience the art. Both pieces require more audience participation and interaction with the art. This seems more like collaboration with the audience because it centers on how they choose to view the pieces.
I think one of the main differences between the two sites is that inbflat was a deliberation collaboration whereas the video creators in THRU YOU had no original intention in being a part of this collaboration. I may be wrong, but I think the creator of inbflat called for other users to upload videos of themselves playing their instruments a certain way to fit the larger purpose. THRU YOU took existing clips and made them into something else.
ReplyDeleteI think it's important to recognize the effort and skill that clearly went into the making of THRU YOU. Where inbflat seems to have required little technical skill in its making, THRU YOU shows its creator's incredible musical and technical knowledge and editing skill. Putting together a cohesive song is hard enough, and doing it completely from found sounds is a massive task. The fact that the site contains 7 of these tracks (and that they are quite pleasant to listen to as well as musically complex) is impressive.
While it does come back to the fact that this music would not be possible if all the separate content creators hadn't uploaded their separate videos, I believe Kutiman's work transcends the label of appropriation.
I agree with pretty much what everyone has been saying. inbflat is more like "My Boyfriend Came Back from the War" and THRU YOU is more similar to "I Know Where Your Cat Lives". With inbflat the audience is part of the art. With every interaction a viewer has with the video: playing, pausing, resuming and the order of which to play changes the the piece itself. It is somewhat nice and comforting to be involved in the creation of something. With THRU YOU there is less contribution from us. It's just another piece. Unless we feel personally connected to the art. It's sort of difficult to get us to feel something.
ReplyDeleteI would say that Thru- you is closer to I know where your cat lives because it is just taking information from a different published site and making it into its own form.
ReplyDeleteI would say that inbflat is closer to my boyfriend came back from the war because it is interactive yet you still come to the same conclusion as far as I can tell. It is still very similar to Thru-you as it takes videos from a different site and posts it in a different format.
Thru You is much more like I Know Where Your Cat Lives, as these two sites take information already existing on the web on popular websites and uses it in a much different manner to create art. Both sites allow us to look at very common information in a new light, giving us the pleasure of seeing art while also showing us how easy it is to obtain information.
ReplyDeleteInBflat shares the user interaction aspect with My Boyfriend Came Back From The War, requiring user input to advance the site. This allows for customized experiences for every viewer since there is no linear path or predetermined website instructions. These sites stress interactivity in creative ways that aren't achieved by most popular sites on the web.
Both sites were really cool, in that they both asked for audience participation, not only to make the site happen (combining people's videos) but for inbflat, which was similar layout to my boyfriend came back from the war, the viewer gets to mix and match what videos they want playing at once.
ReplyDeleteThey were both similar to I know where your cat lives because they combined found videos through filters to use them to create their sites. But I think that thru-you is most similar to I know where your cat lives.
I would definitely say that inbflat has more in common with My Boyfriend came back from the War because they both required the viewer to click various places in order for the project to progress and the order in which the viewer clicked did not matter in either. I really enjoyed inbflat.
ReplyDeleteThru-you is more similar to I Know Where Your Cat Lives because they both find and use photos or videos that already existed on the internet for their projects. The content itself was not new or original but the way it was used in each site was.
Thru-you and inbflat both used Youtube but in different ways. Inbflat is probably my favorite site we have looked at so far.
InBflat is more like My Boyfriend came back from the war requiring the input of the audience and with the audience help the site can advance.
ReplyDeleteInBflat was pretty interesting and probably my favorite website so far.
Thru-you is more like "I know where your cat lives" as it already has the information there but simply uses others videos and pictures to make art. The content on the site was all stuff already on the internet and not new at all. It just used a new idea to put them all together.
In Bb 2.o is more like My Boyfriend Came Home From War because of how it requires viewer interaction to drive the narrative. The order the viewer views the videos changes the piece.
ReplyDeleteBoth of these sites delighted me and blew my mind. I spent quite a while with in b flat trying to make something that didn't sound beautiful and it was impossible. They are both very similar in that they're both collages of unconnected videos that come together in a great way. in b flat is much more interactive, so it's similar to my boyfriend came back from the war; however they are definitely both more fun and light hearted than that. I will definitely be showing inbflat to some of my friends .
