I think some of the positive advancements that could arise from this are improved and sustainable food sources. using genetic modification and other scientific advancements could help us unlock a way to sustain the population.

Other more lighthearted ideas i had are the commercialization of the self driving car or maybe even some new forms of transport. I was also interested in the rising popularity of houses that are connected throughout by a network that you can use to control every function of your house and appliances.

All great ideas. A few too many to comment on in depth, but I think it's promising that you are looking at optimistic ways to address difficult issues. What might our homes look like in the future if the population keeps growing? Will we be eating at a lower trophic level, or will the meat industry win out over reason? Will the U.S. overcome the pressures of the auto, rubber, gas/oil and fast food industries and build rail systems? There's looks to explore here.
